How to best prepare for your professional headshot portrait sessions

Having a professional portrait or headshot taken can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially if you're not used to being in front of the camera. However, with a little bit of preparation, you can ensure that your portrait or headshot looks natural and captures your best self. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your photoshoot:

  1. You are unique, embrace it! The most common phrase I hear before EVERY portrait session is: “can you take 10lbs off in Photoshop?” I want every client I work with to know unless you have the swine flu that day, you are capable of a great headshot. We all have our insecurities and “flaws” but keep in mind you are as young as you’ll ever be today. Embrace the moment and give it your best!

  2. Choose the right outfit: Consider the purpose of your portrait or headshot. Is it for a professional profile or LinkedIn photo? Is it for a modeling portfolio? Your outfit should be appropriate for the occasion. If you're having a professional headshot taken, choose a suit or business casual attire that reflects your personal style. Avoid wearing clothing with busy patterns or logos, as they can be distracting. Solid colors are usually a safe choice. Solid, neutral colors tend to work best. And last but not least - iron your shirt or change into a freshly pressed outfit just prior to your session

  3. Make-up & haircut: If you're due for a haircut, schedule it a few days before your portrait session. This will help you look and feel your best.

  4. Relax: The most important thing is to relax and be yourself. Your photographer will guide you through the process and help you feel at ease. Don’t pre-plan your facial expressions or “look”: A natural, relaxed smile is always a good choice for a portrait. As a professional photographer, it is my job to bring that out naturally through our interaction & conversation. I find when clients have rehearsed their pose or look beforehand, it tends to look exaggerated.

  5. Bring props: If you have a prop or accessory that is meaningful to your role and/or profession (guitar, sports gear), consider bringing it to the session to add some variety to your portrait.

By following these tips, you'll be well-prepared for your professional portrait or headshot session. With a little bit of preparation and a lot of confidence, you'll have a photograph that truly captures your personality and spirit.
